The Anderson Arts Center is a part of the Kemper Art Museum, and it supports all forms of art: from music to painting. The Anderson Arts Center is a multi-functional arts center that has evolved from its origins as an exclusive private residence. The expansive ceilings and wall space lend themselves to the display of work by local, regional, and nationally recognized artists.
James Anderson, American Brass executive and his wife Janet Lance Anderson were the sons-in-law of Andrew H. Lance, Simmons Company Executive with Emma Bell Simmons as mother in law to James. Z G (Zachariah George)Simmons who founded a company that manufactured mattresses named after him was not only Mrs.Anderson's grandfather but her brother Gilbert S Lances' namesake too for he held an executive position at Cooper Companies/Jockey International which manufactures underwear and has its headquarters on East Colorado Blvd in Pasadena Ca.
Construction on the mansion began in 1929. The French Renaissance Revival style, two-story home was completed only a year later with more than thirty rooms and design input from architects Ralph Milman and Archibald Morphet of Chicago, Illinois.
